Machinist version of kitchen table

Not your average kitchen table. Started with cast iron legs and gears from an 1860s metal lathe that was being scrapped. Local White Oak boards used. Extensions are standard unistrut running in ball bearings. Table extends 36” by use of the crank. Acme threaded rod by Keith Rucker.

And the Grandkids will probably put a servo motor on it so they can swap the leaves out with their phone.

Nah, by then they'll just take a picture and have their Insta3D™ printer make one. It'll use totally organic-based feedstock, and decompose to air and compost after use, so it doesn't take up extra space. Ah, progress!
 
very impressive work, all you need now is an app on your phone to open up the center and close it.
 
Nicely done -- although I might have some concern for smacking my shin into that crank handle if sitting at that end.
