Can 5-Axis Machining Eliminate EDM?
Is EDM always the best solution when machining molds? Not really. Watch as Steve Michon from Zero Tolerance showcases in which situation a 5-Axis machine tool can eliminate the need for a sinker or wire EDM.
EDM is a great machining process that can deliver results often unachievable with more traditional cutting methods. This process, however, can be very time-consuming and expensive. For this reason, many machine shops try to eliminate the need for it whenever possible. In this episode of “Learn to Burn“, Steve discusses the topic and demonstrates how 5-axis machining can in some cases completely replace the EDM burning method. Watch as Steve showcases his shop’s 5-Axis capabilities (including a Makino F5-5XR and their new YCM RX65, full 5-axis trunnion style) and examines some examples where he successfully eliminated the need for EDM and some examples where EDM is still the only viable machining method.
