The Motorcar in the Big Apple – The Earliest New York Auto Shows: Our detailed photos today depict scenes from the 1904 New York exhibition at Madison Square Garden. Aside from the various makes on display, you’ll notice that aftermarket accessory vendors that had already become a vital part of the industry were hawking their wares in the balcony overlooking the main exhibition floor. See much more along with a video of an 1899 gathering at The Old Motor.

Here is a 90 hp Peerless, engine probably for the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup in Ireland. (From Michael Ulrich's book on the 1903 Paris-Madrid).

We can see mechanically worked inlet valves and no doubt the exhaust valves are on the other side of the motor, 'T' head style. Perhaps those are ignition breakers in the inlet valve chambers?
