Plastic side gear cover replacement

I am looking at buying a heavy ten. It is a CL187RB and has the plastic, bolt on, side gear cover. Is it possible to switch this to the old hinged metal cover? Will it fit? It looks like all I need to do is find that bracket that clamps onto the far ways near the headstock. Also, the S/N of the lathe is 20218R with flame hardened ways. Can anyone give me an approx date of manufacture?

according to SBL Serial Number File that would be early 1977?

Thanks Allan. That helps. On the gear cover, will an older cast iron one fit with the hinge? Is there some kind of lock mechanism when the lathe is running that i'll need also?

I do have one of the cast covers with the small spindle gaurd for sale. I also have a plastic one so I can check for you. I will send you a Private Message in a couple hours. Kenny

Thanks Kenny. Also, not only will the cast iron cover work, but will it work with the hinge mount? That way I don't have to bolt on and off.
