redneck 3ph generator

I recently worked on a generator from a semi truck. It is belted to the motor and generates 120 V single phase power to run the heating/air conditioning system. The armature is a squirrel cage like an induction motor with some small magnets and a separate stator winding is connected only to a capacitor. There is no voltage regulator or windings on the rotor. As you spin it up, the output is low until it gets close to rated RPM, then comes up rapidly. The voltage increases slightly with load rather than sagging. I think the controlling factor is a resonance of the capacitor and its winding.

Edit: Around here the electric company linemen do not touch a system with a foreign wire-period. If you have a generator hooked to your house supplying power when there has been a blackout, you get everything disconnected before they come near it. Understandable.
