I have a couple junk aluminum wheels I want to use as a base for a roller stand behind my table saw to support long boards. Does anyone know if they would need 5000 series wire to weld the uprights on to them?

I would use whatever rod i reached for first. They are junk wheels...so the weld just needs to be coherient. FYI if I am buying rod for home use (where i dont have a heat treating furnace), i will almost always buy 5000 series. Its slightly stronger, but you dont want to use it in heat treated structures (were talkin AA6061 here).

Hope this helps

Nick
